Mentored Papers: Diving Deeper into DHS Program Data
The DHS Program collects and disseminates population, health, and nutrition data, but did you know The DHS Program also helps people access and use data? Stronger analytical capacity will enhance evidence-based decision making in countries worldwide. The DHS Program provides a variety of capacity strengthening opportunities, from open self-guided online courses on the DHS Program Learning Hub to in-person workshops.
The DHS Faculty Fellows Program and DHS, MIS, and SPA data analysis workshops introduce participants to DHS survey data structure, coding, and processes to analyze DHS Program data. In 2023, The DHS Program established the Mentored Papers Program, an opportunity for alumni of these DHS Program capacity strengthening activities to apply their analytical skills and dive deeper into DHS Program data.
Through the Mentored Papers Program over the last two years, 11 researchers developed 6 working papers with mentorship from and in collaboration with co-authors from The DHS Program’s research and analysis team. Lead authors conceived of the research question and met with their DHS Program co-author routinely to pose questions and get help tackling challenges. DHS Program co-authors reviewed and co-developed code for the analysis using either Stata or R, advised lead authors on their analysis plan, and contributed to the interpretation of the results. Mentored paper manuscripts are published as pre-print working papers on The DHS Program website and are submitted to peer-reviewed journals. Read the 2023 mentored papers here:
